چکیده

The fast transit of the Ulysses spacecraft from the south polar regions of the heliosphere to the north polar regions has allowed us to obtain a unique perspective on the configuration and properties of the heliospheric magnetic field at a time of solar minimum activity. We compare the magnetic field in the northern and southern hemispheres and find no evidence of asymmetry in the radial component of the field or in the variances of the field. We find that the magnetic field polarity corresponds to that observed at the Sun. The only difference between the hemispheres is that, while magnetic field lines in the southern hemisphere have a most probable azimuth angle approximately 24◦ more tightly wound than predicted by the Parker model, those in the northern hemisphere are in good agreement with the model.

Coronal radio sounding with Ulysses: solar wind electron density near 0.1 AU during the 1995 conjunction

Dual-frequency ranging measurements were recorded for a three-week interval during the 1995 solar conjunction of the Ulysses spacecraft. The unusual occultation geometry resulting from the high inclinationUlysses orbit enabled coronal radio sounding from the solar South Pole to the heliographic equator at solar ray path offsets near 0.1 AU. The electron column density along the line-of-sight be...

Heliospheric Magnetic Field Configuration at Solar Maximum Conditions: Consequences for Galactic Cosmic Rays

During solar maximum conditions, the heliosphere is highly structured on all spatial scales. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize our current understanding of these structures from global scales to mesoscale, a fraction of 1 AU. We use theoretical considerations, in situ observations near Earth and the Ulysses spacecraft, and global heliosphere calculations to discuss the effects on bot...

Are coronal holes the only source of fast solar wind at solar minimum?

[1] A two-dimensional (2-D) MHD model of an Alfvén-wave-driven solar wind in the heliospheric meridional plane is presented whereby the consequences of a magnetic field distribution at the Sun that digresses from the standard dipole structure, often used in 2-D MHD models, are explored. The latitudinal distribution of open magnetic flux is specified at the solar surface, with a clear distinctio...

Ulysses COSPIN observations of cosmic rays and solar energetic particles from the South Pole to the North Pole of the Sun during solar maximum

In 2000–2001 Ulysses passed from the south to the north polar regions of the Sun in the inner heliosphere, providing a snapshot of the latitudinal structure of cosmic ray modulation and solar energetic particle populations during a period near solar maximum. Observations from the COSPIN suite of energetic charged particle telescopes show that latitude variations in the cosmic ray intensity in t...

Spatial variation of>40 MeV/n nuclei fluxes observed during the Ulysses rapid latitude scan

In this paper we present fluxes of galactic cosmic ray nuclei with energies above 40 MeV/n observed by the Kiel Electron Telescope on board the Ulysses spacecraft during the fast scan from the South Pole (September 1994) to the North Pole (July 1995). This part of the Ulysses orbit gives us the unique opportunity to investigate spatial modulation of cosmic rays under solar minimum conditions. W...
